The 50th anniversary celebration ceremony of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) was held successfully in Beijing on November 10 2007.
Hui Liangyu, Vice Premier of China, delivered a keynote speech at the ceremony, conveying his greetings and appreciation to the devoted agricultural scientists and speaking highly of the scientific achievements made by CAAS and the role of CAAS in China’s agricultural development during the past fifty years.
At the ceremony Mr Sun Zhengcai, Minister of Agriculture, highly recognized CAAS’s leading role in solving the agricultural, rural and farmers’ issues and in tackling the general, directional, fundamental and critical sci-tech issues as the “national team”. Mr Sun made closing remarks by saying as a national-level agricultural research institution of NARS currently as well as national agricultural innovation center of the national S&T innovation plan in China, CAAS has duties to develop agricultural science and technology, conduct human resource training programmes, organize joint research activities, promote international exchange and communication and serve the nation’s major development goals.
In his speech, Dr. Zhai Huqu, President of CAAS, said that with the co-efforts of agricultural scientists in China, CAAS made technology breakthrough in hybrid rice, hybrid maize, transgenic Bt cotton, dwarf-and-male-sterile wheat and hybrid canola, cultivated over 4000 new crop varieties and accomplished a series of achievements in high-yield plant cultivation, low and medium yielding farmland transformation, pest control, EIAV vaccine and avian influenza genetic engineering vaccine. Through demonstration, transformation and application of the above achievements, CAAS contributed to increasing the nation’s grain output, controlling agricultural disasters, protecting the ecological environment, improving people’s health and ensuring the sustainable development of agriculture.
During the celebration ceremony, CAAS received letters of congratulation from more than 40 countries and all the international organizations relevant to agricultural research. UN Under-Assistant General and Executive Director of UNEP Achim Steiner and FAO Director General Jacque Diouf sent their sincere congratulations to CAAS for the great achievements over the past 50 years.
